Before the Jewish people got to Auschwitz, they thought that
being deported was a good thing because they thought that they were going to be
safe. On page 18 someone said “who knows? Perhaps we are being deported for our
own good. The front isn’t very far off; we shall soon be able to hear the guns.
And the civilian population would be evacuated anyway….” Another person on the
train said “if you ask me, the whole business of deportation is just farce. Oh
yes, don’t laugh. The boches just want to steal our jewelry. The know we’ve
buried everything, and they’ll have to hunt for it: it’s easier when the owners
are on a holiday….” On the train the probably said that to lighten up the mood
and possibly said why they are being moved.
